Subject: Urgent Appeal for Increased Official Development Aid Spending

Dear [Recipient’s Name],

I trust this email finds you well. I am writing to express my concern regarding the recent decrease in Canada’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget. As a constituent, supporter of The Borgen Project, and a committed advocate for international development, I am deeply troubled by the planned $2.7 billion CAD decrease in foreign aid spending over the next four years.

The Liberal Party’s former promise to incrementally increase overseas development spending each year until 2030 was a testament to Canada’s dedication to global well-being and sustainable development. This reduction in the ODA budget contradicts this commitment and raises questions about our nation’s role in addressing pressing global challenges.

It is crucial to recognize that ODA plays a pivotal role in addressing poverty, promoting human rights, and fostering sustainable development worldwide. In times of increasing global challenges, including climate change, economic disparities, conflicts and wars, and pandemics, maintaining and enhancing Canada’s contribution to ODA is not only a moral imperative but also in the best interest of our nation.

I urge you to consider the following points:

  1. Global Responsibility: Canada, as a member of the international community, has a responsibility to contribute to global efforts aimed at eradicating poverty, ensuring access to healthcare and education, and promoting sustainable development.
  2. Impact on Vulnerable Communities: The reduction in the ODA budget directly affects vulnerable communities that depend on international assistance for basic necessities, education, and healthcare. By increasing the ODA budget, Canada can play a significant role in improving the lives of millions of people.
  3. Fulfilling Commitments: The former commitment to increasing ODA until 2030 reflects Canada’s dedication to being a leader in global development. Failing to meet these commitments not only undermines our credibility but also jeopardizes the progress made in previous years.

I respectfully urge you to advocate for a reassessment of Canada’s ODA budget and work towards a substantial increase. By doing so, Canada can continue to be a beacon of hope and progress on the global stage.

I appreciate your time and consideration of this matter. I am confident that, with your leadership, Canada can continue to be a force for positive change on the global stage.

Thank you for your dedication to public service, and I look forward to witnessing Canada’s continued commitment to international development.

Sincerely,

Subject: Urgent Action for a Ceasefire and Unrestricted Humanitarian Access in Sudan

Dear [MP’s Name],

I hope this email finds you well.

I am writing to draw your urgent attention to the catastrophic humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan. After more than two years of brutal conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), civilians are facing starvation, mass displacement, disease outbreaks, and widespread violence. Over 30 million people now require humanitarian assistance, and Sudan has become the world’s largest displacement crisis, with more than 11 million people internally displaced and millions more forced to flee across borders.

The situation is deteriorating rapidly. According to the UN, famine is already present in multiple regions, including displacement camps in Darfur and Kordofan, with millions at risk of starvation as food, water, and medical supplies become unreachable due to active fighting and deliberate access restrictions. Outbreaks of cholera, measles, and other preventable diseases continue to spread due to the collapse of Sudan’s health system.

Humanitarian agencies are unable to reach people in need. Aid convoys have been blocked, workers attacked, and vital border crossings closed. The UN has repeatedly warned that without immediate and unhindered humanitarian access, hundreds of thousands of lives are at risk. Under international humanitarian law—including the Geneva Conventions—starvation of civilians, obstruction of aid, and attacks on densely populated areas are unacceptable and unlawful.

As your constituent and an Ambassador for The Borgen Project,  I am urging you to do everything in your power to:

  • Call for an immediate, nationwide ceasefire
  • Demand unrestricted humanitarian access across Sudan, including safe corridors for aid organisations and protection for aid workers

Sudanese civilians are facing intolerable suffering. Canada must take a strong stance to help end the violence and ensure life-saving aid reaches those who need it most.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
