“The world is a mess. Poverty, aids, hunger, war. So what else is new? What if there was an unexpected solution that would turn this sinking solution around?”
The Girl Effect is a movement and campaign started by business magnate, investor, and philanthropist Warren Buffett. Sponsored through The Nike Foundation, NoVo Foundation, United Nations Foundation and Coalition for Adolescent Girls, these prominent and highly recognized foundations have come together to bring awareness of the millions of adolescent girls living in poverty. The mission and goal of this motivational campaign is to allow people to understand that there is a way to end global poverty through the idea and belief in the field of international development with opportunities and education.
What exactly is The Girl Effect, and how does this contribute in helping the end to world poverty? While many women are fortunate to call themselves free in a country that they believe is to be safe and fair, millions are living in a poverty stricken areas that view women as lower than men. Low-income occupations, domestic and sexual violence, the costs of raising children, hunger, and war are some of the various reasons why women are at a greater risk for poverty than men. These are some the sorts of integral issues that The Girl Effect focuses on, because this unfair disadvantage of women in poverty-stricken nations causes so much grief for the women affected by them. The rate of this kind of exclusion is immensely high.
For example, in India, discrimination against girls and women have resulted in nearly $10 billion in lost potential income due to adolescent pregnancy. These issues are also seen in the Democractic Republic of Congo, where women are unable to even obtain health screenings or appointments because of a deadly war and frequent domestic and sexual violence affairs.
With all these massive issues occurring around the world, The Girl Effect wants to address the root problems and provide education on how to eliminate them. As a part of their campaign, they have launched a number of videos addressing the issue of global poverty and how it affects women today. In one of their campaign videos, the following line states, “The world is a mess. Poverty, aids, hunger, war. So what else is new,” which introduces the concept of The Girl Effect and their movement. There is one simple message to all of the viral videos that were posted from this campaign, and the message is “Girls are agents of change.”
The Girl Effect does not only exist to end poverty for the world, but to end the effects of poverty on the girls of the world themselves. This powerful movement and campaign wants women and girls to comprehend and believe that with the power and support of other women who have all these opportunities, 600 million girls living in a developing country will be able to live and do better for themselves and others.
