Sylvia Matthews Burwell has been named the new director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC). U.S. Global Leadership Coalition Executive Director Liz Schrayer announced Burwell’s appointment.
The USGLC faces tough economic and fiscal challenges and the organization anticipates that Burwell’s experiences make her an outstanding choice to navigate the difficult budget and to continue USGLC’s smart power agenda. Burwell’s resume boasts OMB experience, the Treasury Department, and global development. She has a reputation of excelling in global engagement, and has a lot to share in regards to private sector involvement with government programs.
Burwell’s experience in the non-profit sector with the Gates Foundation, as well as the corporate sector, after working with Wal-Mart offer a wealth of development experience. Burwell is passionate about improving American development programs, and working to make development programs more efficient and effective. She is eager to look for and implement the best priorities and investments for USGLC to engage globally.
Burwell has often spoken about the value of American global engagement. Burwell worked as the President of the Wal-Mart Foundation and led the company’s charitable efforts as well as their Global Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative while also guiding the company’s social, environmental, and economic opportunity efforts in Africa. Burwell’s vast budgetary experience and motivation to invest in the developing world place her as a logically wonderful choice to head the USGLC’s OMB and lead the organization into a sound and stable future.
