How did you get interested in global issues?
I found my interest at the age of 16, when I was starting to become politically active about the living conditions of those living in the Gaza Strip. I soon realized that there are many others who are living in similar conditions all around the globe. One of these conditions includes living in poverty, which affects and is affected by other factors such as gender inequality, sanitation, environmental disparity, etc.
Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
Three generations ago, my own family was living in poverty in Afghanistan, and with a little help from the community and with a lot of luck, we were able to step into a decent comfortable life with a reliable income. I wish such a success story to everyone out there who is suffering from missing out on a decent life, to which they are all entitled to.
Any interesting tidbits to share?
In my spare time, I like catching up on the news, reading articles, watching TV shows and spending time with my friends and family. I also enjoy eating French fries and playing The Sims 3TM, but unfortunately, I rarely get the chance to do so, unless I am on a holiday from college.
My compassion/humility list:
I will do the following for any friends or family who donates in my honor…
- For $20, I will write you a song/poem.
- For $50, I will cook you a three-course meal.
- For $100, I will give you a piggyback ride for half an hour around my or your house.
- For $150, I will give you all my college notes pertaining to my majors and personally tutor you on them.
