How did you get interested in global issues?
I am a political science and history student, and since the beginning of my A Levels, I have learned about international politics. This has taught me a great deal about global poverty in various governments and the various initiatives being implemented by organisations like the UN to combat it. I have learned about several wars that have taken place around the world, including those in Afghanistan and Kosovo, which showed the extent of their suffering following the wars, and poverty is unquestionably one of the largest problems. It breaks my heart to see how much suffering there is, especially in failing governments like Yemen and Syria, where many children are dying from poverty.
Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
One of the most difficult worldwide problems that needs more attention to be tackled and minimised is poverty. Not having enough money or other resources to support a sustainable way of life is only one aspect of poverty. It also manifests as hunger and malnutrition, limited access to essential services like healthcare, discrimination and social exclusion, and a lack of participation in decision-making. In addition to the pain of hunger, poverty also poses considerably greater hazards, such as jeopardising global security.
