Name: Mathilde Henriksen
Location: Currently in Oslo, Norway. I live and study Communication and Political Science in New York City, NY.
Position: PR/Marketing Intern

Fundraising Goal: $500

How did you get interested in global issues?
During my gap year, I backpacked through Southeast Asia. I visited countries such as Cambodia and Vietnam, where I got to see first-hand extreme poverty and inequality. This sparked my interest particularly in poverty alleviation. My Political Science major and courses on international law, human rights, and international political economy further heightened my interest in global issues, which eventually encouraged me to get involved and utilize my passion, knowledge and experience to contribute to fight global poverty.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
I believe I have a responsibility to use my voice to advocate for those in lack of one. Working for The Borgen Project provides me with an incredible opportunity to help those in need and make a positive impact on the world. The world has done an astonishing job getting people out of poverty, and fewer people are living in extreme poverty now than ever. But, there is still a lot to do, and this motivates me to take part in an organization that wants to do even better. Poverty is very much man-made, and that is why I believe it is up to us to do as much as we can to fight it.

Any interesting tidbits to share?
I am a serious fan of John Oliver and the way he sheds light on important issues that aren’t talked about as much as they should have been. Political communication is my passion, and I aspire to use my experience from my double majors in Political Science and Communication to do something similar to Mr. Oliver someday. I’m also a Norwegian Viking who loves to ski and eat brown cheese.

My compassion/humility list:
I will do the following for any friends or family who donates in my honor…
1. For $25, I’ll clean your room.
2. For $50, I’ll cook your favorite meal.
3. For $100, I’ll go on a date with you.

Please note restrictions apply: NYC or Oslo area only. ☺
