Name: Mary Colandene
Location: Norfolk, Virginia
Position: Political Affairs Intern

Fundraising Goal: $500

How did you get interested in global issues?
I am studying international studies, and I plan to go to law school and continue to be a lawyer focusing on human rights and global poverty. I was in Naval ROTC at ODU for over a year because I wanted to serve my country and fight for global peace and security, but I realized that my skills are better fit for political affairs. I also volunteer for the YWCA, and I have always been interested in women’s rights, so I want to be an advocate for women around the world.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
I feel that my calling is to help people. I have a strong moral character and excellent work habits, so I know that I have the power to do something good in the world.

Any interesting tidbits to share?
I am in a sorority Tri Sigma at ODU. I volunteer for the YWCA, and I am a Red Cross Student Ambassador. I work for the Nauticus Foundation Part time in Norfolk. I also run a successful professional airbrushing business, Paradise Tanning by Mary. My family is originally from Northern Virginia, but they moved to San Francisco two years ago, so when I graduate, I plan to go to law school in San Francisco.

My compassion/humility list:
I will do the following for any friends or family who donates in my honor…

  1. $50: I’ll make you a personalized playlist for any occasion
  2. $75: 2 free spray tans
  3. $100: Homemade 4-course dinner
