Name: Maria Argenal
Location: Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Position: Advocate

Fundraising Goal: $500

How did you get interested in global issues?
I was born and raised in Nicaragua—exposed to extreme poverty every day. I have been able to serve the Nicaraguan community through education, but it is harder to make a difference through policy in a country where democracy no longer exists. With a Sociology major and Economics minor, I have been able to understand the mechanisms of poverty, their barriers, and ways in which it can be alleviated.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
It is the least I can do knowing that there are people living day-by-day in search of a stable life (safe food and drinking water, shelter, health care, education). I am grateful for the education I have received that has provided me the tools and skills to be able to serve the world’s poor and make a difference.

Any interesting tidbits to share?
I love hiking volcanoes back home! There are around 19 of them, 5 of which I have hiked.

My dream is to open a non-profit organization in Nicaragua to fight climate change by empowering low-income communities through education about sustainability and conservation along with a program of manufacturing biodegradable plastics.

My compassion/humility list:
I will do the following for any friends or family who donates in my honor…

  1. $20: Coffee and sweets on me,
  2. $60: The most delicious vegan brunch,
  3. $90: Let’s go out on the boat, and I’ll teach wakeboarding.
