Name: Maheera Siddique
Location: Granger, IN
Position: Political Affairs Intern

Fundraising Goal: $1,000

How did you get interested in global issues?
I have always been interested in other places and other cultures and how people choose to communicate across those borders, whether they are in different countries or across a dinner table. Where I live, it’s been difficult to create those avenues of communication, simply because many people never had the chance to have conversations with people unlike themselves. So, in trying to create spaces where communication was encouraged by teaching Henna and Culture programs at my local library or giving talks about the experience of Hijabi women, I became attracted to politics and different global issues that our world leaders attempt to influence.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
I think that this is an important aspect of US Foreign Policy. The United States is a global leader and trendsetter in the political arena. It is the only country in the world with the capacity to end world hunger. But, most importantly, it is my home, and I would like my home to be more involved with helping those in need.

Any interesting tidbits to share?
In my free time, I like to do henna, watch movies with my family, and read! I also like to paint and sketch whenever I get the chance. It gives me a chance to be creative, but also express the influence that Pakistani art has on my experiences as an individual.
