Name: Katia Martinez
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Position: PR/Marketing Intern

Fundraising Goal: $1,200

How did you get interested in global issues?
Ever since I was little, I wondered why I had the privilege to grow up in a household with clean water, clothes and food. Once I was older, I realized that instead of asking myself why I was born with these assets, I should take advantage of having all of these resources to help others.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
I am volunteering because, in the past, I have seen that it is one of the most rewarding things I could do. I love working with non-profits because everyone always welcomes new ideas. In my experience with non-profits, the people make you feel valued, your work feels appreciated, and you are always seeking out ways to improve the organization. I have spent my free time volunteering in cities like Columbus and St. Marys; however, I wanted to do something on a bigger scale, and that was when I read about The Borgen Project. This non-profit internship gives me the opportunity to inform others about the ways we can help end WORLD hunger. It’s as simple as giving your 2 U.S. Senators and 1 U.S. Representative a call saying you are a Borgen Project supporter and would like for them to protect the International Affairs Budget or key poverty-reducing legislation, such as the Global Fragility Act or Keeping Girls in School Act.

Any interesting tidbits to share?
I really enjoy reading (especially self-help books). I love cooking as it helps me take a break from studying. Currently I am training for a 10k run as well as working toward perfecting my falafel making skills. I love spending time with my family and friends and playing the game Quiplash with my roommates. I also enjoy exploring new coffee shops, making new Spotify playlists, and attending alternative rock concerts.

My compassion/humility list:
I will do the following for any friends or family who donates in my honor…

  1. $50: Pay for coffee, toll, or the bus fare for the person behind me
  2. $150: Clean & organize your room / do your laundry
  3. $200: Make dinner (appetizer, entree, AND dessert)
