Name: Jessica Martinez
Location: Hialeah, FL
Position: Political Affairs Intern

Fundraising Goal: $500

How did you get interested in global issues?
After taking an international affairs class my freshman year, I realized the world was deeply interconnected. This class also taught me some of the struggles people around the world face. I learned that I could do something about these problems and that they would ultimately change my own country. From then, I swore to not live in ignorance and work to help those who need it around the world.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
I believe that every human deserves a certain quality of life. I believe that if we work to get those in poverty out of poverty, we are able to solve so many other problems that are byproducts of poverty. Solving these issues mean they are able to lead better lives and therefore become stronger producers and consumers who lead happier lives.

Any interesting tidbits to share?
I not only have a passion for improving the world around me, but I also love photography and videography. Seeing pictures from other countries and the situation they are in was another big motivator for me to take action. I hope I am able to capture a different picture for myself in a couple years.

My compassion/humility list:
I will do the following for any friends or family who donates in my honor…

  1. $75: Clean your house
  2. $80: Plan a dessert extravaganza
  3. $100: Be your chauffeur
  4. $200: Plan a day out, all expenses paid
