How did you get interested in global issues?
I did debate in high school and learned a bit about foreign policy, economic development and global security. Since then, I have been interested in the inequalities between people born into privilege and those who were not, and I think that The Borgen Project is a way to help get the US more involved in these issues. I also took an international political economy class that opened my eyes to the interconnected nature of modern economies and how important and effective development projects can be.
Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
I believe that every individual, regardless of their status at birth and their home country, has a fundamental human right to have their basic survival needs met. As a global leader, the US can help alleviate hunger and eradicate preventable diseases that still run rampant globally. Secondarily, development is in the direct interest of the United States because it creates new markets for our goods and increases security. The United States contributes a relatively low share of its GDP to foreign aid and development projects, and hopefully, through advocacy, we can spark legislation that will change that.
