Name: Indira Varma
Location: Menlo Park, CA
Position: PR/Marketing Intern

Fundraising Goal: $500

How did you get interested in global issues?
Global issues serve as a large umbrella to specific topics that are constantly overlooked. Ever since my sophomore modern world history class in high school, I have been fascinated by what goes on in the world. It is important to give back not only to the local community, but also to those around the world who are in need. Improving conditions in places around the globe not only help those people, but the world as a whole.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
What better way to spend the summer than to dedicate time to helping those in need? It shouldn’t be a question how important it is to help those who are not as fortunate. I am volunteering my time because I not only care about helping others, but also wish to work to make a change in the world by confronting the most pressing foreign affairs issues.

Any interesting tidbits to share?
I am a current student at Ithaca College in upstate New York, where I study media relations and strategic communications. Additionally, I am a member of the intercollegiate women’s lacrosse team at Ithaca. When I am not playing lacrosse, I enjoy going to the beach, playing with my dog Henry and hiking both in Ithaca, and in my home town of Menlo Park, California.

My compassion/humility list:
I will do the following for any friends or family who donates in my honor…

  1. $100: Clean a room in the house, which would include folding clothes, organization, vacuuming and more!
  2. $200: Plan a local weekend getaway for a group or couple, taking place sometime this summer
  3. $300: Personalized photoshoot
