Dooley, Claudia

Name: Claudia Dooley
Location: Peterborough, United Kingdom
Role: Writer/Journalist Intern

Fundraising Goal: £400

How did you get interested in global issues?
Growing up, I have always taken an interest in global issues, however, it was during the 2015 migrant crisis that I became keen to contribute personally. I could not believe the scenes I was seeing across Europe and wanted to find out more. I began to research the conflicts causing the refugee crisis and discovered how much of a role the developed world plays in sustaining these conflicts.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
Whilst global poverty may seem like an obvious issue to be concerned about, it does not seem to be discussed much in our daily lives. It is for this reason; I believe many people have become complacent and see it as an unwavering part of our reality. At The Borgen Project, the organisation stands up for the world’s poor and does not let our leaders forget about such an important issue.

Any interesting tidbits to share?
Jeffery Sachs, a leading economist, has estimated that it would cost the world $175 billion per year for 20 years to eradicate global poverty. Whilst this may seem like an astronomical number, this represents less than one percent of the combined income of the richest countries in the world.
