Name: Alyssa Harper
Location: Port Arthur, TX
Position: Political Affairs Intern

Fundraising Goal: $750

How did you get interested in global issues? The more aware I become of the misconceptions of foreign aid and global poverty, the more I see there is a way to improve the lives of those living in developing countries as well as improve the economy and security of my own country. I hope to pass what I have learned along to my fellow constituents and inspire them to become part of changing the world.

Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor? I live in a town near the Texas/Mexico border, and I have had close friendships with immigrants my entire life. I am so close to this humanitarian crises on the border, but there is nothing I can do except to fight for these people using legislation such as the US Northern Triangle Act to improve the living conditions of asylum seekers on their own soil and prevent future generations from the need to seek asylum.

Any interesting tidbits to share? I am known in my friends circle as the “old lady.” I enjoy crocheting, reading, and cats. On the flip side, I’m very active and run every 5k I can find. I am currently training for my first half marathon.

My compassion/humility list:
I will do the following for any friends or family who donates in my honor…

  1. Give a one-hour crochet lesson ($50 donation)
  2. Deliver you a home cooked meal ($50 donation)
  3. Do your laundry or clean your house ($75 donation)
  4. One session of my tutoring service for your grade school child ($50 donation)
  5. Grade your papers ($25 donation)
  6. Sponsor me for a 5k. I will promote your business on the run. ($100)
