How did you get interested in global issues?
My interest in global issues mainly comes from my studies; for my undergraduate degree, I studied Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies which opened up discussion for a wide variety of global issues in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world dating back centuries. For my dissertation, I wrote about US-Brazil trade relations during the Trump and Bolsonaro years and how this relationship resulted in widespread damage to the Amazon Rainforest. Currently, I am undertaking my postgraduate studies in Modern Languages & Cultures with a particular focus on international relations.
Why are you volunteering your time to serve the world’s poor?
My ultimate career goal would be to work as a diplomat, and eventually become the UK ambassador in a Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking country. Making a difference in your community and speaking up for the under-represented groups in society is a huge part of diplomacy, and this includes serving the world’s poor. As found in many studies, combating world poverty benefits us all in the long-run and something that all the strong economies of the world should make a key focus of their foreign policy. As part of the Political Affairs Team at The Borgen Project, this is what we aim to do, and this is what makes my role here so personally important to me.
Any interesting tidbits to share?
In my spare time, I love going to the gym and cooking healthy meals, especially for my friends and family. I also love travelling and one day hope to live abroad!
