Key Global Poverty Legislation in Congress

Global Food Security Act (S. 384)
Authorizes appropriations for fiscal years 2010 through 2014 to
provide assistance to foreign countries to promote food security, to
stimulate rural economies, and to improve emergency response to
food crises.



Newborn, Child and Mother Survival Act (H.R. 1410)
Authorizes the President to furnish assistance to improve the health of
newborns, children and mothers in developing countries. Directs the
President to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce mortality
and improve the health of newborns, children and mothers in
developing countries. Establishes the Interagency Task Force on
Child Survival and Maternal Health in Developing Countries.



Initiating Foreign Assistance Reform Act (H.R. 2139)
Directs the President to develop and implement a comprehensive
national strategy to further the United States foreign policy objective
of promoting global development.



Shelter, Land and Urban (SLUM) Assistance Act (H.R. 1702)
Authorizes assistance for affordable housing and sustainable urban
development in developing countries.
