These innovative inventions are saving lives, reducing world poverty, protecting children, and reducing the infant death-rate worldwide.
1. The Hippo Water Roller
In many countries in Africa, two out of every five people do not have access to clean water which increases the risk of illness caused by dehydration and poor sanitation. This seemingly simple, plastic barrel has made transporting five-times the amount of water from a source to households in countries where water is not readily accessible. The Hippo Water Roller is already in use in South America, India and 21 African countries, helping people reallocate hours spent fetching water to hours spent in school or completing tasks that may one day lift their families out of poverty.
2. Smartphone Apps
“The Child Abuse Reporting System” (CARS) in Jamaca is a Blackberry App that is making it easier for people to report child abuse in Jamaica. The App enables bystanders to report anonymous, yet effective, incident reports straight to The Children’s Registry (OCR). The App was designed by Samuel Folkes of Aranis Technologies has been approved by Research In Motion. A similar App based in Colombia, called “I Protect You”, enables smart phone users to report Child Labor and Sexual Abuse directly to the Colombian Ministry of Family Welfare.
3. ‘Mwangabora’ Lanterns
Evans Wadongo invented these lanterns and founded a program called Use Solar; Save Lives in 2004 to assist families living in rural Africa without electricity. These solar powered lanterns replace kerosene and firewood that causes devastating health issues due to smoke and soot inhalation. The lanterns are of African design, built specifically to withstand the rural African climate and made out of 50% recycled materials. With the money that the families and villages save from using the ‘Mwangabora’, they can launch new economic ventures and live healthier lives.
4. LIFESAVER Systems
Shaken by the 2004 tsunami in Haiti and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Michael Pritchard invented Lifesaver Systems in 2007. Lifesaver Systems distributes and sells simple, low cost water filtration systems and that store and clean water for millions of people around the world. One jerrycan can provide clean drinking water to a family of four for 50 years. The company philosophy, “Everyone deserves safe drinking water”, rings true as these bottles and jerrycans assist people from all walks of life in obtaining a valuable, natural resource.
5. Embrace Infant Warmer
20,00,000 low-birth-weight and premature babies are born each year. 450 of these babies die every hour. The Embrace Infant Warmer provides a stand-in incubator for new born babies in developing countries were such medical technologies are not available. With the ultimate goal of providing every woman and baby an equal chance for a healthy life, Embrace distributes these infant warmers to the people that need then them the most in the hopes of reducing the newborn death rate, health care costs, and population growth world wide.
